Electricity generated at the Springhill Regional Landfill near Campbellton, Fla., is added to our generation mix to further diversify our resources so that we continue to offer the most reliable, economical and environmentally sound power possible. Through a partnership between Waste Management and PowerSouth, methane gas from Springhill Regional Landfill is extracted and burned to generate 4.8 megawatts of green energy, which is then placed on the transmission grid and made available for all members in PowerSouth’s system.
An 80-megawatt large scale solar facility in Covington County, Alabama, Wing Solar is a collaboration between PowerSouth and Origis Energy to supply PowerSouth and its members with green, affordable solar energy. The solar facility, constructed on 986 acres and consisting of over 238,000 solar panels, began transmitting power to the grid in March 2023. The 80 megawatts generated at the facility is enough to power approximately 13,000 homes annually.
The Gantt and Point A Hydroelectric Dams are a landmark in Covington County, and they have provided reliable power for PowerSouth since 1944. Together, the Point A and Gantt facilities have an 8 megawatt capacity – enough to power approximately 8,000 homes.
PowerSouth takes a portion of the nearly 3,400 megawatts of capacity generated by the Southeast Power Administration’s (SEPA) hydroelectric facilities. SEPA serves more than 12 million consumers across 11 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. These are several of the SEPA hydroelectric facilities from which PowerSouth receives energy.
